Magnetic Field

A magnetic field is a vector field of a changing electric field. It is the electric current of a magnet where the magnetic forces can be observed. It is created through intrinsic magnetic moments and moving electric charges of moments of elementary particles.  These particles are associated with a fundamental quantum property which is termed as the spin. Both the electric field and magnetic field are interrelated to each other that prove to be the components of the electromagnetic force. In this video lesson, we will study the magnetic field, including the properties of the magnet, units of the magnetic field.

It was in the year 1269 when the research on the magnetic field began. The magnetic field on the surface of a spherical magnet with the use of iron needles was mapped by Petrus Peregrinus de Maricourt who happened to be a French scholar. He found that it was at the two points that the resulting field lines crossed. So, he termed these points as ‘poles.’ It was then found that magnets have North and South poles no matter how finely one slices them.
