What is Osmotic Pressure?

Osmosis is the movement of water from a zone of low concentration of solute to a region of higher solute concentration. A solute can be atoms, ions, or molecules dissolved in a fluid. The rate of osmosis is controlled by all the particles dissolved in the solution. The more particles dissolved, the quicker the rate of osmosis.

In the event that a membrane is available, water will flow to the area where the concentration of solute is high. Osmotic pressure is the pressure made by water moving over a membrane because of osmosis. The more water moving over the membrane, the higher the osmotic pressure.
