A beam of white light passing through a ...

A beam of white light passing through a hollow prism give no spectrum.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

NOTE: For the light to split, the material through which the light passes should have refractive index greater than 1. Since the prism is hollow, we get no spectrum. The thickness of glass slabs through which the prism is made can be neglected.

When a white light passes through a hollow prism then

Assertion : A beam of white light when passed through a hollow prism cannot give spectrum. Reason : Because refractive index of air inside and outside the prism is same so no refraction and hence no deviation wll take place.
