On the basis of valence bond theory explain the nature of bonding in `[CoF_(6)]^(3-)` ion. Write the IUPAC name of `[Co(NO_(2))_(3)(NH_(3))_(3)]`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`[CoF_(6)]^(3-)` Cobalt exixt in the `+3` ocidation state.
Orbitals of `Co^(3+)` ion :

Again, fluoride ion is weak field ligand. It cannot cause the pairing of the 3d electrons. As a result, the `Co^(3+)` ion will undergo `sp^(3)d^(2)` hybridization. `sp^(3)d^(2)` hybridized orbitals of `Co^(3+)` ion are :

Hence, the geometry of the complex is octahedral and paramagnitic.
