Mechanism of Aldol addition reaction :
step I : Base `(-OH^(-))` abstracts a hydrogen atom from `alpha`-carbon of aldehyde to from carbanion. In this step hydrogen giving the reactive enolate.

Step II : The nucleophilic enolate attacks the aldehyde at the electrophilic carbonyl C in a nucleophilic addition type process giving an intermediate alkoxide

Step III : Alkoxide ion abstracts a hydrogen ion from water to from `beta`- hydroxy aldehyde. Base `OH^(-)` ion is regenerated
