Bio - reacters : Transgenic animals would also be useful as bio - reactors to produce pharma-cologically important proteins such as `prop` - I - anti - trypsin, it is used to treat emphysema. Also for treatment of phenylketonuria (PKU).
(iv) Chemical safety testing : Transgenic animals carry genes which make them more sensitive to toxic substances .
