A spool is pulled by a force in vertical direction as shown in figure . What is the direction of friction in this case? The spool does not loose contact with the ground.

`tau_(F)` about `O` is anticlockwise so, it will roll leftwards F is vertical so horizontal force is vertical. So, horizontal force is provided by friction (to give it linear acceleration a). So, friction acts leftwards.
