Assertion (A): The increasing pressure o...

Assertion (A): The increasing pressure on water decreases its freezing point.
Reason (R ):The density of water is maximum at `273 K`.

A

If the both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion

B

If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion

C

If assertion is true but reason is false

D

If both assertion and reason are false statements.

The correct Answer is:
B

According to Clapeyron-Clausius equation,
`(dT)/(dP) = (T(V_l-V_s))/(DeltaH_f)`
Since density of ice less than that of water , `V_s` is greater than `V_l`. In other words, the expression on the right hand side of the above equation is negative. This means that the increase of pressure must lower and decrease of pressure must raise the freezing point.
