Assertion `:` In optical fibre, the diameter of the core is kept small.
Reason `:` This smaller diameter of the core ensures that the fibre should have incident angle more than the critical angle required for total internal reflection.

A

If both Assertion & Reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

B

if both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct expalanation of the assertion

C

if assertion is true , but reason is false

D

both assertion and reason are false statements.

The correct Answer is:
A

Total internal reflection will be for rays incident at an angle greater than C. If the fibers. Are thin, only rays almost parallel will pass, further for non paraxial rays, the angle of incidecne is large and therefore, they also wil be totally internally reflected. Both are right.

Assertion : In optical fibre, the diameter of the core is kept small. Reason : The small diameter of the core ensures that the fibre should have inside it an angle greater than critical angle needed for total internal reflection.

Sparking Brilliance of Diamond: The total internal reflection of the light is used in polishing diamonds to create a sparking brilliance. By polishing the diamond with specific cuts, it is adjusted the most of the light rays approaching the surface are incident with an angle of incidence more than critical angle. Hence, they suffer multiple reflections and ultimately come out of diamond from the top. This gives the diamond a sparking brilliance. A diamond is immersed in a liquid with a refractive index greater than water. Then the critical angle for total internal reflection will

Assertion (A): In case of rainbow, light at the inner surface of the water drop gets internally reflected. Reason (R): The angle between the refracted ray and normal to the drop surface is greater than the critical angle.

An optical fibre is made of glass fibre of refractive index 1.68. The outer coating of the glass fibre is made of material of refractive index 1.44. What is the range of angles of the incident rays with the axis of the pipe for which total internal reflection inside the optical fibre takes place?

The refractive index of the core of an optical fibre is mu_(2) and that of the cladding is mu_(1) .The angle of incidence on the face of the core so that the light ray just under goes total internal reflection at the cladding is

For an optical fibre ,the ratio of the refractive index of the core to the refractive index of the cladding is 1.25 . What is the critical angle at the core cladding interface ?

Assertion : Optical fibers are used for telecommunication. Reason : Optical fibres are based on the phenomenon of total internal reflection.
