Assertion: Rayleigh scattering can be co...

Assertion: Rayleigh scattering can be considered as elastic collisions of photons with massive particles.
Reason: In Rayleigh scattering. The energy of incident and scattered is same.

A

If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

B

If both assertion and reson are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

C

if assertion is true but reason is false.

D

If both assertion and reason are false.

The correct Answer is:
A

In Rayleigh scattering, when a photon (of momentum P) collide with a very massive particles (of mass m) (distant particles, . . . Etc.) then the momentum transferred will be P or 2P
so energy transferred is `(P^(2))/(2m)` or `((P^(2)))/(2m)` which will be very small.

(a) What is the essential condition for Rayleigh scattering ? (b) In Rayleigh scattering, how is intensity of scattered light related to wavelength of light ?

Assertion (A): Scattering of light is the reflection of light from an object in all directions. Reason (R): The colour of scattered light depends on the size of scattering particles and wavelength of light.

Assertion : In elastic collision, kinetic energy is conserved. Reason : Energy is always conserved.

Assertion: There is not loss in energy in elastic collision. Reason: Linear momentum is conserved in elastic collision.
