Why do radioactive element decay?...

Why do radioactive element decay?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The stable nuclei are found to have `"neutron//proton"` `(n//p)` ratio in the range 1 to 1.5. The nuclei whose `n//p` ratio lies outside this range (i.e., `lt 1` or `gt 1.5)` lose `alpha`-or `beta`- particles so that their `n//p` ratio into the stability belt.
