A compound formed by two elements M and ...

A compound formed by two elements `M` and `N`. Element `N` forms ccp and atoms of `M` occupy `1//3rd` of tetrahedral voids. What is the formula of th compound?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
`M_(2) N_(3)`

ccp packing is close packing
Let the number of `OV = 1//atom`
`:.` Number of `TV = 2//atom`
Number of `M` atom `= (1)/(3) xx 2 = (2)/(3)`
Thus formula is `M_((2)/(3)) N_(1)`.
Simplifying, formula is `M_(2) N_(3)`.
