A cubic solid is made of two element `P` and `Q` Atoms of `Q` are the corners of the cube `P` at the body-centre. What is the formula of the compound? What are the coordination number fo `P` and `Q`?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Number of `Q` atoms per unit cell of cube `= (1)/(8) xx 8 = 1`
Number of `P` atoms `= 1//"unit cell`.
The formula of the compound is `PQ` or `QP`.
The coordinate number of each of `P` and `Q` is 8 becuause the crystal has body-centred cubic structure.
