Suggest the most important type of intermolecular attractive interaction in the following pairs `:`
`a. n-`Hexane and `n-`octane
`b. I_(2)` and `C Cl_(4)`
`c. NaClO_(4)` and water
`d.` Methanol and acetone
`e.` Acetonitrile `(CHM_(3)CN)` and acetone `(C_(3)H_(6)O)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`a.` Both are non`-` polar, hence the intermolecular attractive interaction in this will be van der Wall's forces or London dispersion forces.
`b.` Same as in `(a)`
`c.` `NaClO_(4) rarr Na^(o+)+ClO^(c-)`
`NaClO_(4)` gives `Na^(o+)` and `ClO_(4)^(c-)` ions in the solution while water is a polar molecule. Hence, intermolecular attraction in then will be ion`-` dipole interaction.
`d.` Both methanol and acetone are polar molecules. Hence intermolecular interaction in them will be dipole `-` dipole interactions.
`e.` Same as in `(d)`
