Bond angle in `"PH"_(4)^(" "+)` is higher than that in `"PH"_(3)`. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In both `"PH"_(4)^(+)` and `PH_(3)`, phosphorus atom is `sp_(3)` hybridized. In `"PH"_(4)^(+)`, all the four orbitals are bonded whereas in `PH_(3)`, there is a lone pair of electrons too. Due to lone pair-bonded pair repulsion in `PH_(3)`, the bond angle is less than `109.5^(@)`.
