How do the ionic character and acidic nature vary among the oxides of first transition series?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`rarr` As the oxidation number of a metal increases ionic character decreases in case of transition elements. Eg. : `Mn_(2)O_(7)` is a covalent green oil.
`rarr V_(2)O_(5)` is however amphoteric though mainly acidic `V_(2)O_(5)` reacts with alkali as well as acids to give `VO_(4)^(-3) and VO_(4)^(+)`.
`rarr Cro` is basic
`rarr Mn_(2)O_(7)` gives `HMnO_(4) and CrO_(3)` gives `H_(2)CrO_(4) and H_(2)Cr_(2)O_(7)`.
