Write notes on amino acids

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The organic compound which contain amino `(-NH_2)` functional group and carboxyl (-COOH) functional group are called amino acids
Eg: Glycine, Alanine etc.
Essential amino acids: The amino acids which cannot be synthesized in the body and must be obtained through diet are known as essential aminoacids.
Eg: valine, leucine etc.
`to` Examples of non essential amino acids are alanine , glycine etc.,
Zwitter ion : In aqueous solution of amino acids, the carboxyl group can lose a proton and amino acid can accept that portion to from a dipolar ion. This ion is called as zwitter ion .
`R-undersetoverset(|)(underset(..)NH_2)(CH)-oversetunderset(||)(O)C-OHiffR-undersetoverset(|)(underset("zwitter ion")(+NH_3))(CH)-oversetunderset(||)(O)(C)-O^-`
Peptide linkage :
Amide `(-oversetunderset(||)(O)(C)-NH-)` linkage between amino acids are known as peptide linkage. The product obtained from two amino acid molecules through peptide bond is called a dipeptide. Peptide chain may be extended to many amino acids.
Proteins are naturally occuring polypeptide that contain more than 50 amino acid units
