What is the difference between a soap and a syntheic detergent?

1)Generally soaps are sodium or potassium salts of long fattyacids.
2)Synthetic detergents are cleansing agents having all the properties of soaps and donot contaon any soap.
3) Saopss donot work in hard water but synthetic detergents can be used in soft and hard water as they give foam even water.Some of the detergents give foam even in ice cold water.
