Why aniline does not undergo Friedel - Crafts reaction ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Aniline is a lewis base and `AlCl_(3)` is a Lewis acid. In Friedal Craft's reaction both of these combined to from a complex
`underset("Lewis box")(C_(6)H_(5)NH_(2)) + underset("Lewisacid")(AlCl_(3)) to underset("Complex")((C_(6)H_(5)NH_(2))^(+) (AlCl_(3))^(-))`
Due to formation of complex the electrophilic substituation tendency decreases in aniline and it does not undergo these reaction.
