You are given `8 Omega` resistor, What length of wire of resistivity `120 Omega m` should be joined in parallel with it to get a value of `6 Omega`?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Given, Resistance of resistor `R = 8 Omega`

Resisty of wire `rho = 120`
Let l length of the resistance x is to be connected to get effective resistance,
`R_(P) = 6 Omega`
Then `(1)/(R ) + (1)/(x) = (1)/(R_(p))`
`(1)/(8) + (1)/(x) = (1)/(6) implies (1)/(x) = (1)/(6) - (1)/(8) = (2)/(48)`
`:. x = 24 Omega`
And `x l = rho`
`24 l = 120`
`:. l = 5m`
