Obtain an expression for the emf induced across a conductor which is moved in a uniform magnetic field which is perpendicular to the plane of motion.

Text Solution

Consider a conductor PQ of length I moving freely in a uniform magnetic field `vecB` with uniform velocity `upsilon` on a rectangular conductor ABCD. Let any arbitrary charge q in the conductor also move in the field with same velocity.
Magnitude of Lorentz force on
this charge (F) `=Bqupsilon....(1)`
Workdone in moving the charge from P to Q is given by
`W= "Force"xx "displacement"`
`W= Bqupsilon xx l –(2) (therefore" Direction of force on the charge as per Fleming's left hand rule")`
Electromotive force `(epsi) = (W)/(q)`
`epsi=(Bqupsilonl)/(q) Rightarrow epsi=Blupsilon -(3)`

What happens to the mechanical energy (of motion) when a conductor is moved in a uniform magnetic field?

Refer to fig. The arm PQ of the rectangular conductor is moved from x=0 outwards. The uniform magnetic field is perpendicular to the plane and extends from x=0 to x=b and is zero for x gt b . Only the arm PQ possesses substantial resistance r. Consider the situation when the arm PQ is pulled outwards from x=0 to x=2b, and is then moved back x=0 with constant speed upsilon . Obtain expressions for the flux the induced emf, the force necessary to pull the arm and the power dissipated as Joule heat. Sketch the variation of these quantities with distance.
