The work function for a certain metal is...

The work function for a certain metal is 4.2 eV. Will this metal give photoelectric emission for incident radiation of wavelength 330 nm ?

Text Solution

Given, `phi_(0)=4.2 eV = 4.2 xx1.6xx10^(-19)J = 6.72xx10^(-19)J`
`lambda = 330 nm = 330xx10^(-9)m, h = 6.63xx10^(-34)J - s rArr c = 3 xx 10^(8) m//s`
`E = (hc)/(lambda)=(6.63xx10^(-34)xx3xx10^(8))/(330xx10^(-9)) therefore E = 6.027xx10^(-19)J`
As `E lt phi_(0)`, no photoelectric emission takes place.
