Will photoelectrons be emitted from a co...

Will photoelectrons be emitted from a copper surface, of work function `4.4 eV`, when illuminated by a visible light?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The thresold wavelength `lamda_0` corresponding to work function W is given by
`lamda_0=(hv)/(W)`or `lamda_0=(12400)/(4.4)=2820A`
Since `lamda_0` does not lie in the visible range `(4000 A to 7500 A)`, therefore it cannot eject photoelectrons from copper.
