An aluminium ring hangs vertically from ...

An aluminium ring hangs vertically from a thread with its axis pointing east-west. A coil is fixed mear to the ring and coaxial with it.
What is the initial motion of the aluminium ring when the current in the coil is switched on?

A

moves toward `E`

B

moves toward `W`

C

moves toward `N`

D

moves toward `S`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
A

When the switch is closed, the current flows through the coil which sets up a magnetif flux `phi` through the ring. The motion of the ring will be such that, by Lenz's law, it opposes the sudden increase in flux linkage. Hence, the ring moves away from the coil or towards `E` (east).

A compass needle free to turn in a horizontal plane is placed at the centre of a circular coil of 30 turns and radius 12 cm. The coil is in a vertical plane making an angle of 45^@ with the magnetic meridian when the current in the coil is 0.35amp. , the needle points west to east. (a) Determine the horizontal component of earth's magnetic field at the location. (b) The current in the coil is reversed and the coil is rotated about its vertical axis by an angle of 90^@ in the anticlockwise sense looking from above. Predict the direction of the needle. Take the magnetic declination at the places to be zero.

A uniformly charged thin ring has radius 10.0 cm and total charge +12.0 nC . An electron is placed on the ring's axis a distance 25.0 cm from the centre of the ring and is constrained to stay on the axis of the ring. The electron is then released from rest, then (i) describe the subsequent motion of the electron (ii) find the speed of the electron when it reaches the centre of the ring.

A compass needle free to turn in a horizontal plane is placed at the centre of a circular coil of 30turns and radius 12cm. The coil is in a vertical plane malting an angle of 45^(@) with the magnetic meridian when the current in the coil is 0.35A, the needle points west to east. Determine the horizontal component of earth's magnetic field at the location.

A circular coil is lying on the horizontal floor and one bar magnet with its length vertical and along the axis of coil starts falling down towards the coil. What can you say about the direction of induced current in the coil?
