Does a travelling wave in one dimension ...

Does a travelling wave in one dimension represented by a function of a linear combination of x and t,i.e., `y=f(ax+-bt)` represented a travelling wave?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

No, another obvious condition that this function must satisfy is that it must be finite everywhere and at all times. For example, `1//(x+vt)` cannot represent a travelling wave wheras `sin (ax+-bt)` does.
