What is the percentage change in the tension necessary in a somometer of fixed length to produce a note one octave lower (half of original frequency) than before?

A

`25%`

B

`50%`

C

`67%`

D

`75%`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
D

In a sonometer ,
` f prop sqrt(T)`
Thus , `(f_(1))/(f_(2)) = 2 = sqrt((T_(1))/(T_(2)))`
`T_(2) = (T_(1))/(4)`
So percentage change will be
`(T_(1) - T_(2))/(T_(1)) xx 100 = (T_(1) - (T_(1))/(4))/(T_(1)) xx 100 = 75%`
