Highly pure dilute solution of sodium in liquid ammonia

A

Shows blue colour

B

Exhibits electrical conductivity

C

Produces sodium amide

D

Produces hydrogen gas

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A, B

The alkali metals dissolve in liquid ammonia without the evolution of hydrogen. The colour of the dilute solution is blu.
`Na^(o+)+(x+y)NH_(2)rarr[Na(NH_(3))_(x)]^(o+)+underset("electrons")underset("ammonia")([e(NH_(3))_(y)]^(Θ))`
On heating, its blue colour changes to bronze.
It is an ammoniated elecctron which is responsible for the colour and otherproperties. The solutions are good conductors of electricity and have strong reducing properties. The solutions are paramagnetic in natire.

Assertion : As the very dilute solutions of alkali metals in liquid ammonia are made more concentrated, the molar conductivity at first decreases, reaching a minimum at about 0.05 molar, thereafter , it increases again. Reason : The molar conductivity of the saturated solution of the alkali metals in liquid ammonia at -33^(@)C is comparable to that of a metal.
