Give reason : CO is readily absorbed by ...

Give reason : `CO` is readily absorbed by ammonitcal cuprous chloride , but not ` CO_2` .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Carbon monoxide `(CO)` due to the presence fo lone pair on `C` acts as a Lewis base and thus forms soluble complex in ammoniacal cuprous chloride .
`Cu Cl + NH_3 : CO rarr underset ("Soluble comlex") ([Cu (CO) (NH_3) ]^(o+) Cl^(Θ))`. However ` CO_2` does not behave as a lewis base since it does not have lone paire of electron on the carbon atom and hence does not dissolve inammoniacal cuprous chlaroide .
