Which of the following halides is least stable and has a doubtful existence ?

A

`C Cl_4`

B

`Gel_4`

C

`SnI_4`

D

`Pbl_4`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

Due to strong inert pair effect , `Pb^(2+)` is more stable tha `Pb^(4+)` . Non-existence of ` Pb_4` can be explained on the basis of strong oxdising nature of ` Pb^(4+)` . The iodide ions are preducing angents . In the presence of these ions , ` Pb^(4+)` ions are reduced to `Pb^(2+)` ions .
`Pb^(4+) + 2 I^(Θ) rarr Pb^(2+) +I_2`.
