Which bond is stronger in each of the following cases and why?
a.`H_(2),Br_(2)` , b.`O_(2),N_(2)` , c. `F_(2),Cl_(2)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

a. `H-H` bond is stronger than `Br-Br` bond because of smaller size of H-atoms.
b. `N-=N` bond is stronger beause it contains triple bond while `O_(2)` contains double bond `(O=O)`.
c. `Cl-Cl` bond is stronger. But `F-F` bond is weaker because of the very small size of two F-atoms, repulsions between non-bonding electrons present on each F-atoms are very large.
