Give reason why elemental nitrogen exitsts as diatomic molecule whereas elemental phosphours is a tetraatomic molecule.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nitrogen is diatomic `(N_2)` because of its ability to form `ppr-ppr` multiple bond. This is not possible in other elements of group 15 elements due to greater repulsion between non-bonded electrons of the inner core electrons.
