Why oxygen molecule is diatomic whereas sulphur molecules is octa atomic?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Oxygen atom is small and hence capable of forming `ppi-ppi` multiple bond and thus exists as `O_2`. On the other hand, due to large size, sulphur does not form `ppi-ppi` multiple bond and form `S_8` rings.
