The paramagnetic character in 3d transit...

The paramagnetic character in `3d` transition series elements increases up to `Mn` and then decreases. Explain why.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As aw move from `Sc(Z=21)` to `Mn(Z=25)` the number of unpaired electrons increases and hence paramagnetic character increases. After Mn, pairing of electrons in the d-subshell starts and the number of unpaired electrons decreases and hence paramagnetic character decreases.
