What happens to the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor if the area of its plates is doubled ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`(C_2)/9C_1)=(A_2)/(A_1)[therefore C=(epsi_0A)/(d)]`
Given `A_2=2A_1,(C_2)/(C_1)=(2A_1)/(A_1)[because C_2=2C_1]`
Therefore capacity increases by twice.

What is the area of the plates of a 2 F parallel plate capacitor , given that the separation between the plates is 0.5cm ? [You will realise from your answer why ordinary capacitors are in the range of muF or less. However , electrolytic capacitors do have a much larger capacitance (0.1F) because of very minute separation between the conductors.]
