Three balls of different masses are thrown at different instants up againsts up gravity. While all the three balls are in air, the centre of mass of the system of three balls has an acceleration :

A

Equal to 'g'

B

Which depends on the direction of motion and speed of different balls.

C

Which depends on the velocities, height and masses of the balls.

D

Which depends on the direction of motion, speeds and masses of the ball.

The correct Answer is:
A

(a) If `m_1,m_2 and m_3` be the masses of the balls, the acceleration corresponding to each ball is 'g'.
Acceleration of centre of mass will be
`overline a = (m_1 g + m_2 g + m_3 g)/(m_1 + m_2 + m_3) = g`.

Three small balls of equal mass (m) are suspended from a thread and two springs of same force constant (K) such that the distances between the first and the second ball and the second third ball are the same. Thus the centre of mass of the whole system coincides with the second ball. The thread supporting the upper ball is cut and system starts a free fall. Find the distance of the centre of mass of the system from the second ball when both the springs acquire their natural length in the falling system.
