A car starts from rest and moves along the x-axis with constant acceleration `5 ms^(-2)` for `8` seconds. If it then continues with constant velocity, what distance will the car cover in `12` seconds since it started from the rest ?

Here, `u = 0, a = 5 m//s^(2), t = 8 s`
From `s = ut + (1)/(2)at^(2)`
`s = 0 + (1)/(2) xx 5 xx 8^(2) =160 m`
This is the distance moved by the car is first `8 sec`. Velocity at the end of `8 s` is
`v = u + at = 0 + 5 xx 8 = 40 m//s`.
As this velocity is uniform, distance moved in next `4 s`
`s' = v xx t = 40 xx 4 = 160 m`
Total distance covered by the car in `12 s`
`= s + s' = 160 + 160 = 320 m`
