Assuming that the orbit of the planet Mercury around the sun to be a circle, Copernicus detrmined the orbital radius to be `0.38AU`. From this determine the angle of maximum elongation for Mercury and its distance from the earth when the elongation is maximum .

The correct Answer is:
`22.3^@ ; 1.384xx10^8km`

Here, `r_(ps) =0.38A U , r_(es)= 1A U`
The angle of maximum elongation `"in"`is given
by
`sin "in" = (r_(ps))/(r_(es)) = (0.38)/(1)`
Now,`r_(pe) =r_(es)xxcos "in"`
`1.496xx10^(11) cos (22.3^@)`
`=1.496xx10^(11)xx0.9252 = 1.384xx10^(11)m`
`=1.384xx10^8km`

Assuming that a planet goes round the sun in a circular orbit of radius 0.5AU determine the angle of maximum elongation for the planet and its distance from the earth when elongation is measured.

When a planet is orbiting around the sun in an elliptical orbit, r_(1) and r_(2) denote its closest and farthest distances from the sun. Then the ratio of the magnitudes of maximum and minimum gravitational forces between them is

A planet moves around the sun in an elliptical orbit. When earth is closest from the sun, it is at a distance r having a speed v . When it is at a distance 4r from the sun its speed will be:
