Show that avertage velocity of the objec...

Show that avertage velocity of the object over an interval of time is either smaller than or equal to the average speed of the object over the same interval.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Since, avetage velocity=(displacement )/(total time taken)
and average speed =(total distance travelle)/(total time taken)
Since, displacement of an object can be equal to or less than the total distance travelled in a given time, hence, average velocity of an ohject over an interval of time is either equal to or samller than the average speed of the object over the same interval in time.

Assertion: The average velocity of the object over an interval of time is either smaller then or equal to the average speed of the object over the same interval. Reason: Velocity is a vector quantity and speed s a scalar quantity.

Assertion: The magnitude of average velocity of the object over an interval of time is either smaller than or equal to the average speed of the object over the same interval. Reason: Path length (distance) is either equal or greater than the magnitude of displacement.

The velocity of an object changes from 50 m/s to 60 m/s in 20 seconds. What is the average acceleration of the object over that interval?

Prove that average velocity of an object can never be greater than the average speed of an object over a given interval of time.

Assertion: The average speed of a body over a given interval of time is equal to the average velocity of the body in the same interval of time if a body moves in a straight line in one direction. Reason: Because in this case distance travelled by a body is equal to the displacement of the body.

Explain clearly, with ezamples, the distaintion between : (a) magnitude of displacemnt (sometimes called distance ) overand interval of time, and the total length of the path coverd by a particle over the same interval. (b) magnitude of average velocity over an intercal of time , and the average speed ocer the same interval. [ Average speed of a particle over an interval of time is defined as the toal path length divided by the time intrval]. Show in both (a) and (b) that the second quantity is either greater than or equal to first. When is the equality sing true ? [ For simplocity, consider one- dimensional motion only]

It magnitude of average speed and average velocity over an interval of time are same, then

For a moving object the distance covered by it is always greater than or equal to the displacement of the object in a given time interval . Comment .

Explain with example the distinction between the magnitude of average velocity and average speed over the same period. Show that and the average speed is either greater than or equal to the average velocity. When is the equality sign true?

Which of the following statements is /are correct ? I.Average speed over a finite interval of times is greater or equal to the magnitude of the average velocity. The instantaneous speed at an instant is equal to the magnitude of the instantaneous velocity at that instant.
