A radioactive element `X` has an atomic number of 100. It decays directly into an element `Y` which decays directly into an element `Z`. In both the processes either one `alpha` or one `beta-` particle is emitted. Which of the following statement could be true?

A

`Y` has an atomic number of `102`

B

`Y` has an atomic number of `101`

C

`Z` has an atomic number of `100`

D

`Z` has an atomic number of 37

The correct Answer is:
`(b)`

`X rarr Y rarr Z, Y,Z` are formed either `alpha` or `beta-` decay. Thus if `X` has at no. `100m Y` may have `98,101` during `alpha` and `beta-` decay respectively. Similaarly, if `Y` has no at `98,Z` may have at no. 96 or 99 during `alpha` and `beta-` respectively. If `Y` has at no. 101, `Z` may have at no.99 or 102 during `alpha` and `beta-` decay respectively.
