If the Earth stops rotating about its polar axis, what will be the effect on the value of acceleration due to gravity 'g' ? Will this effect be same at all places?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to ratation of Earth, the value of acceleration due to gravity at a location on Earth is given by
`g' = g - R omega^(2) cos^(2) lambda`
where `lambda` is the latitude of a place. `omega` is the angular velocity of ratation of Earth about its polar axis. Since `lambda` is different for different locations on Earth, so g' has least value on equator `( = g - R omega^(2))` and maximum value at pole `(= g)`. When Earth stops rotating, `omega = 0`. Now `g' = g`. It means the value of `g` will increase at all places except at poles. This increases is maximum at equator.
