When a body of mass 240 kg is placed on a ice berg floating in sea water, it is found that the ice berg just sinks. What is the mass of the ice berg ? Take the relative density of ice as 0.9 and that of seac water as 1.02.

Let M be the of ice berg in kilogram. Therefore volume of ice berg. `V = (M)/(0.9 xx 10^3) = (M)/(900)m^3` When the ice berg just sinks, then the weight of water of volume V displaced ` = Vxx(1.02xx 10^3)xxg = (M)/(900) xx 1020 xx g` Ac cording to law of floatation weight of water displaced must be equal to weight of ice berg and the body placed on it. `:. (M)/(900)xx1020 xx g =(M + 240)g`
`or M((102)/(90) -1) = 240 or M = (240xx90)/(102 - 90)`
