What are the two basic characteristics of a simple harmonic motion?

The two basic characteristics of a particle executing SHM are as follows:
(i) In SHM, the acceleration of a particle at an instant is directly proportional to its displacement from the mean position at that instant and is always directed towards mean position.
(ii) Acceleration and displacement of a particle in SHM are directed in opposite directions.
