Explain why
(a) A diamond glitters in a brightly lit room, but not in a dark room.
(b) A crack in a window pane appears silvery.
( c) The bubbles of air rising up in a water tank appear silvery when viewed from top.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(a) A diamond glitters in a brightly lit room because light entering the diamond from any face suffers multiple total internal reflections and does not come out. The diamond appears illuminated from inside. This would not happen in a dark room.
(b) A crack in a window pane appears silvery on account of total internal reflection of light in the crack.
( c) The bubbles of air rising up in a water tank appear silvery when viewed from top again on account of total internal reflection of light from the bubble.

Why does water tank appear shalleower when veiwed from the top ?

Paheli kept some water in a beaker for heating. She observed that tiny bubbles appeared before the water started to boil. She boiled the water for about 5 minutes and filled it in a bottle up to the brim and kept the bottle air tight till it cooled down to room temperature (a) Why did the tiny bubbles appeared ? (b) Do you think tiny bubbles will appear on heating the water taken out from the bottle? Justify your answer.

Assertion : An empty test tube dipped into water in a beaker appears silver, when viewed from a suitable direction. Reason : Due to refraction of light, the substance in water appears silvery.

Answer the following questions (a) In a single slit diffraction experiment, the width of the slit is made double the original width. How does this affect the size and intensity of the central diffraction band? (b) In what way is diffraction from each slit related to the interference pattern in a double-slit experiment? (c) When a tiny circular obstacle is placed in the path of light from a distant source, a bright spot is seen at the centre of the shadow of the obstacle. Explain why? (d) Two students are separated by a 7 m partition wall in a room 10 m high. If both light and sound waves can bend around obstacles, how is it that the students are unable to see each other even though they can converse easily (e) Ray optics is based on the assumption that light travels in a straight line. Diffraction effects (observed when light propagates through small apertures/slits or around small obstacles) disprove this assumption. Yet the ray optics assumption is so commonly used in understanding location and several other properties of images in optical instruments. What is the justification?

Shows a large closed cylindrical tank containing water, Initially the air trapped above the water surface has a height h_(0) and pressure 2p_(0) where p_(0_ is the atmospheric pressure. There is a hole in the wall of tank at a depth h_(1) below the top from which water comes out. A long vertical tube is connected as shown. (a) Find the height h_(2) of the water in the long tube above the top initially. (b) Find the speed with which water comes out of hole.(c)Find the height of the water in the long tube above the top when the water stops coming out of the hole.

Name the process associated with the following (a) Dry ice is kept at room temperature and at one atmospheric pressure. (b) A drop of link placed on the surface of water contained in a glass spreads throughout the water. (c) A potassium permanganate crystal is in a beaker and water is poured into the beaker with stirring. (d) A acetone bottle is left open and the bottle becomes empty. (e) Milk is churned to separate cream from it. (f) Settling of sand when a mixture of sand and water is left undisturbed for some time. (g) Fine beam of light entering through a small hole in a dark room. Illuminates the particles in its paths.
