An unsymmeterical double convex thin len...

An unsymmeterical double convex thin lens forms the image of a point object on its axis. Will the position of the image change if the lens is reversed ?

Text Solution

No, the position of image will not change if the lens is reversed. This is because in the lens maker's formula :
`(1)/(v)-(1)/(u)=(1)/(f)=(mu - 1)((1)/(R_1) - (1)/(R_2)) = -(mu - 1)((1)/(R_2) - (1)/(R_1))`
i.e., on reversing the lens, values of `R_1 and R_2` are reversed and so are their signs. Hence, for given `u` (position of object), position of image (v) remains unaffected.
