What is the effect on the maximum velocity of the emitted electron if the wavelength of the incident light is decreased?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

According to Einstein's photoelectric equation
`K_(max)=(hc)/lambda-phi_0 But K_(max)=1/2mv_(max)^2`
`:. 1/2mv_(max)^2=(hc)/lambda-phi_0 or v_(max)^2=(2hc)/(mlambda)-(2phi_0)/m`
or `v_(max)^2 prop 1/lambda or v_(max) prop 1/(sqrt(lambda))`
It means, as the wavelength `(lambda)` of the incident light decreases, the maximum velocity of emitted photoelectrons increases.
