A planet is moving in an elliptic orbit....

A planet is moving in an elliptic orbit. If `T,V,E` and `L` stand, respectively, for its kinetic energy, gravitational potential energy, total energy and angular momentum about the centre of force, then

A

E is always negative

B

L is conserved but direction of vector L changes

C

U is always positive

D

T is conserved

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

(i) For the planet, the angular momentum (L) is conserved. But direction of L remains constant. Hence (b) is wrong.
(ii) K.E. changes as the velocity changes with distance. Hence (d) is wrong.
(iii) Gravitational P.E. `= -(GMm)/(R )` is negative. (c ) is wrong.
(iv) But the total energy (E ) is always negative .
`therefore` (a) is correct.

CRTM Kinetic Energy and Angular Momentum

A star like the sun has serveral bodies moving around it at different distance. Consider that all of them are moving in circular orbits. Let r be the distance of the body from the centre of the star and let its linear velocity be upsilon , angular velocity omega , kinetic energy K , gravitational potential energy U , total energy E and angular momentum L . As the radius r of the orbit increase, determine which of the above quantities increase and which ones decrease.
