How can you differentiate between addition and condensation polymerisation?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(1)The addition polymers are formed by the repeated addition of monomer units having double or triple bonds. The condensation polymers are formed by repeated condensation reaction between two different bi-functional or tri-functional monomeric units. In condensation polymerisation, the elimination of small molecules such as water, alcohol, hydrogen chloride, etc. takes place.
(2) Addition polymers formed by the polymerisation of a single monomeric species are known as homopolymers, whereas addition polymers obtained from two different monomeric units are termed as copolymers.

Here , (i) and (ii) are the examples of addition polymerisation, and (iii) is of condensation polymerisation.
