What is the advantage of using antihistamines over antacids in the treatment of acidity?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Usual antacids control only the symptoms and not the cause of acidity. They work by neutralising the acid (HCl) produced in the stomach but do not control the causes of production of more acid. On the other hand, antihistamines are the drugs which suppress the action of histamine responsible for secretion of pepsin and HCl in the stomach .In fact, antihistamines prevent the binding of histamine with the receptors present in the stomach wall thereby suppressing the production of HCl. Thus, antihistamines arc better drugs for the treatment of acidity.
