Satellite need a specific velocity to revolve in specific orbit. Justify whether true or false .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

True .
(i) The specific velocity given to a satellite in tangential direction i.e., the critical velocity is given as `V_(c) = sqrt((GM)/(R+h))`
(ii) Since the gravitational constant (G), mass of Earth (M) and the radius of Earth (R) is constant , the ciritical velocity depends on the heigh of the satellite from the Earth's surface. Thus satellites need a specific velocity to revolve in specific orbits.
