If a metal's mass could be completely converted into energy, calculate how much of this metal would be required as fuel for a power plant in a year. This power plant, let us suppose, generates 200 MW on an average.

200 MW =`200 xx 10^6` W = `2xx10^8` W, 1 year = 365 x 24 x 60 x 60 s
`therefore` In 1 year the energy generated,
`E=2xx10^8 xx365 xx 24 xx 60 xx 60 J`
`therefore` Equivalent mass,
`m=E/c^2 =(2xx10^8xx365xx24xx60xx60)/((3xx10^8)^2)`
=0.070 kg = 70 g

Uranium-235 is used as fuel in nuclear power plants. How many protons, neutrons and electrons does an atom of U-235 hove ? [Z=92]

The teachers of Geeta's school took the students on a study trip to a power generating station, located nearly 200km away from the city. The teacher explained that electrical energy is transmitted over such a long distance to their city. In the form of alternating current (ac) raised to a high voltage. At the receiving end in the city, the voltage is reduced to operate the devices. As a result, the power loss is reduced. Geeta listened to the teacher and asked questions about how the ac is converted to a higher or lower voltage. Explain with an example , how power loss is reduced if the energy is transmitted over long distances as an alternating current rather than a direct current .

10^(18) electrons hit a target per second in a X-ray tube with a velocity of 2 xx 10^(6) m cdot s^(-1) . The mass of the metallic piece of the target is 200 g, specific heat is 0.12 cal cdot g^(-1) cdot^(@)C^(-1) and mass of an electron is 9.1 xx 10^(-28) g . If 98% of the energy is converted into heat, how much time will be required to increase the temperature of the metallic piece of the target by 50^(@)C ?

A small town with a demand of 800 kW of power at 220 V is situated 15 km away from an electric plant generating power at 440 V. The resistance of the two wire line carrying power is 0.5Omega . km^-1 . The line gets power from the line through a 4000-220 V step-down transformer at a substation in the town. How much power must the plant supply, assuming there is negligible power loss due to leakage.

From a waterfall 60 m high, water falls at a rate of 27 m^3*s^(-1) . If 75% of energy is available at the bottom for use , how much power will be generated ? Mass of 1m^3 of water is 10^3 kg . If the power is used to lift water from a 180 m deep tubewell, how much water can be raised in 1 s?
